How to Care and Propagate: Aglaonema Plant

Introduction:

  • Aglaonema also known as “Chinese Evergreen” is mainly found in sub-tropical regions of Asia with its wide variety.
  • It is one of the easiest among all houseplants to grow. Red / Lipstick Aglaonema is also one of the most fascinating house plant.
  • As it is very unique in its texture, the combination of dark leaves bordering it with red or light red color makes it look a proper home décor piece thereby adding a good foliage look to the house interiors.

Soil & Climate:

  • It requires well drained soil which retains its moisture for long time period.
  • Soil mixture: 20% compost, 20% river sand, 60% coco peat.
  • Also it grows well if it is planted in only cocopeat as it retains moisture very well.
  • Regards to fertilizer use, one can use cow manure or any organic fertilizer in every 4 to 6 months.
  • Generally it is observed that the plant growth is slow but when it is placed in proper environment, soil and watered accordingly then its growth pace is little high as compare to normal.

Light Requirement:

  • Aglaonema is shade loving plant.
  • It grows well in bright light.
  • If placed in sunlight, then its leaves will lose texture and it gets burnt thereby damaging the whole plant.

Water Technique:

  • Watering to the plant must be done after every 4 to 5 days as it is already planted in cocopeat which has high amount of moisture in it.
  • When watering is done to this plant it should be well watered.

Propagation:

  • One common technique to propagate the Aglaonema plant is by cutting its leaf from its stem and putting it in a glass filled with water. After few days roots will grow and it can be planted in pot.
  • Second technique is Root division technique. When small buds grow in the pot, you can repot them by separating through their roots.
  • Third technique is growing from its seed.

Importance:

  • Aglaonema plant helps to clean out formaldehyde and benzene from the air which thereby promotes a good healthy oxygenated environment.
  • Due to its variety in texture and as it brings good fortune or luck, it has widely gained its importance as house plant or indoor plant.

Vital Tips:

  • Apart from watering the plant every 4 to 5 days, if we see soil dried up to 1 inch, then it is an indication of watering need to the plant.
  • Spray water on leaves when it looks dull which not only gives glossy look but also keep its leaves clean and healthy.
  • In addition to this as it is very light weight plant, avoid keeping it near or under the fan or near the window where wind blows. It should be placed in light area but the proximity of air flow should be low otherwise its leaves will get twisted or sometimes it may get damaged.

Thanks and best of Luck!
