How to care and propagate: Mango Plant (Category: Totapuri or Ginimoothi)

  Introduction:

  • Mango is the main fruit of Asia and this fruit has developed its own importance all over the world.
  • Besides its fine taste and good qualities, it is called as the “King of Fruits”.

Soils and Climate:

  • Both soil and climate of an ecosystem are the important factors which determine about success or failure of mango crop.
  • Mango plant grows in all types of soil but especially it grows well in red soil provided it are deep and well drained. But good soil composition is a success of best quality fruits.
  • Soil mixture: 40% gardening soil, 30% cow manure, 30% coco peat.
  • Additionally, we can add Neem fruit or leaves mixture along with dried banana peel.  This provides calcium, iron and potassium which is an important requirement for mango plant. Also, Neem mixture is an effective pest control.
  • Cow manure or Vermi compost can be added twice in a year.
  • Mango is grown in both tropical and sub-tropical conditions.
  • It requires good rainfall during its growing season i.e. June to October, dry weather from November onwards.

Propagation Technique:

  • Place the mango seed in between moist tissue papers. Make sure the tissues are kept moist properly.
  • Place the moist tissues and seed inside a air tight plastic bag or box. Place the bag or box in a well-lighted place for next 10~14 days.
  • Once roots are germinated then place it in soil mixture (discussed above).
  • Place it in bright lighted area for next 30~60 days. Avoid placing in direct intense sunlight area as the new leaves may get burnt (see the picrure of few burnt leaves in one image shared)
  • For first three initial years, if flower (mohor) has been bear by the plant then we need to pluck it for the good quality of fruit in future.

Watering Technique:

  • Water well once upper layer of soil is dried. You can check by touching the soil.

    Light Requirement:

    • For first three months morning sunlight or filter sunlight is good. Avoid direct intense sunlight for first-three months.
    • Place the plant in direct sunlight post three months or once the plant grows upto three feet. The plant then will love the sunlight, grow healthy and produce good fruits.

    Mango - Food Contain:

    • The energy value per 100 g (3.5 oz) serving of the common mango is 60 ~330 kcal. Fresh mango contains a variety of nutrients but only vitamin C and folate are in significant amounts of the Daily Value as 44% and 11%, respectively.
